The Advent season covers the last four weeks before Christmas. Advent means 'coming.' There is a three-fold reason for that: 1) the coming of our Lord in the flesh at Christmas, 2) the coming of the Lord in his Word, and 3) the coming of the Lord in glory at the end of time. So, Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas, just as John the Baptist prepared people for the first coming of Jesus, so we want our hearts to be prepared today. For that reason, Advent is a time of repentance and the colour purple is normally seen in our church during this time. It is also a time of hope and joyful anticipation, so blue is also used. Each week, another one of four candles is lit, showing the coming of the true Light into the world.
